Leica Q2 Settings Guide: How I Set Up My Camera for Every Shoot
The Leica Q2 is one of those rare cameras that makes you slow down, pay attention, and actually enjoy the process of shooting. It’s simple, fast, and built around a fixed 28mm Summilux lens that’s sharp at every aperture. But like any Leica, the Q2 rewards you when you take the time to set it up intentionally.
This guide walks through exactly how I set up my Leica Q2 for street photography, portraits, travel, low light, and everyday shooting. It follows the same structure as my Canon R6 Mark II guide. Clear steps, real‑world reasoning, and a workflow you can actually use.
If you just bought the Q2 or you’re trying to get more consistent results out of it, this will get you dialed in.
Quick‑Start Settings (TL;DR)
If you want the fast version, here’s how I keep my Q2 set up 90% of the time:
File Format: DNG + JPG Fine
Exposure Mode: Aperture Priority
Aperture: f/1.7–f/5.6 depending on subject
ISO: Auto, Max 6400
Minimum Shutter: 1/250 (people), 1/500 (movement)
AF Mode: AF‑S for most, AF‑C for movement
AF Area: Field or Spot
Metering: Multi
White Balance: Daylight or Kelvin
Stabilization: On
If you want the deeper dive, and the “why” behind each choice, keep going.
Image Quality Settings
DNG + JPG
How: Menu → Image Quality → DNG + JPG
Why: You get the flexibility of RAW with the beautiful Leica color science baked into the JPGs. The JPGs are great for quick sharing; the DNGs give you full editing latitude.
JPEG Settings
If you like Leica’s film styles, this is where you choose them.
Standard for everyday shooting
Vivid for travel
Monochrome for street
Crop Modes (28mm / 35mm / 50mm / 75mm)
The Q2’s digital crops are surprisingly useful.
35mm for portraits
50mm for tighter street scenes
75mm for detail shots
I keep the camera at 28mm and use crops sparingly, but they’re great when you need them.
Exposure Settings
Aperture Priority
This is where the Q2 shines.
f/1.7 for portraits or low light
f/4-5.6 for street and travel
f/8 for landscapes
ISO Auto
Max ISO: 6400 or 12,500 The Q2 handles noise well, and the grain looks organic.
Minimum Shutter Speed
1/250 for people
1/500 for movement
1/125 for low light portraits
Exposure Compensation
I map this to the thumb wheel. The Q2 tends to slightly overexpose in bright scenes, so I often ride –0.3 to –0.7.
Autofocus Settings
AF Mode
AF‑S for most shooting
AF‑C for movement or street
AF Area
Field for general use
Spot for portraits
Tracking is hit‑or‑miss; I rarely use it
Face Detection
Turn it on for portraits. It’s not Sony‑level, but it’s reliable enough.
Touch AF
I keep this on. It’s fast and intuitive.
Drive Mode & Shooting Behavior
Single Shot for most situations
Continuous Low for movement
Burst Mode when shooting action
Self‑Timer 2s for tripod work
The Q2’s buffer is solid, but I still prefer shooting deliberately.
White Balance & Color
White Balance
Daylight for consistent color
Auto when moving between lighting conditions
Kelvin (5200–6000K) for controlled environments
Film Styles
Leica’s color profiles are genuinely good.
Standard is my default
Vivid for travel
Monochrome for street

I keep the essentials here:

This mirrors the structure from my R6 Mark II guide, fast access to the things you change most.
Profiles: How I Set Up My Leica Q2 Shooting Profiles
The Q2 doesn’t use Canon‑style “Custom Modes.” Instead, it gives you six Profiles that store complete shooting configurations, like exposure, AF, metering, color, drive mode, and more.
I treat these Profiles exactly like custom modes on my other cameras: fast, reliable presets for the shooting scenarios I use most.
How Profiles Work
Set up the camera exactly how you want it.
Save that configuration to 1–6.
Recall them instantly from the menu or assign them to the FN button/Q menu.
Profiles are one of the most underrated features on the Q2, especially for street and travel photographers who want consistency.

Travel
Lakefront scenes
Everyday carry
It’s the camera I grab when I want to shoot without thinking about gear. The Q2 rewards simplicity — the more you trust it, the better your images get.
Troubleshooting
AF Hunting
Happens in low contrast. Switch to Spot AF.
Overexposure
Ride –0.3 to –0.7 exposure compensation.
EVF Lag
Turn off power‑saving modes.
Battery Life
Carry one extra battery.
Lens Flare
The Summilux flares beautifully, but a hood helps if you want control.
Dust Concerns
The lens is sealed. You’re safe.
Gear I Use with the Q2
B+W UV filter
Extra Leica battery
Small sling bag
Lightroom workflow for DNGs
Final Thoughts
The Leica Q2 is one of the most enjoyable cameras I’ve ever used. It’s simple, fast, and built around a lens that can handle almost anything. Once you dial in your settings and build a workflow that matches how you shoot, the Q2 becomes an extension of your eye.
