Events in Memphis: May 2026 Photography Guide

May is when Memphis really opens up. The riverfront fills with color, the parks stay busy from sunrise to sunset, and the city’s biggest cultural moments stack up fast. The light gets warmer, the days stretch longer, and the energy shifts into something you can feel as you walk through it. This is what I’m watching this month to capture the spirit of Memphis.

If you’re photographing the city, this is where the energy is.

I document these moments and everyday scenes as they unfold on Instagram @ruttahs, so if you want to see March through a photographer’s eye, that’s where the story continues.

Major Events

Riverbeat Festival

May 1-3
Tom Lee Park

Riverbeat kicks off the month with one of the biggest music and culture weekends on the riverfront. It sets the tone for the entire Memphis in May season and brings huge crowds to Tom Lee Park right as the weather hits its stride.

Camera Policy

Personal cameras and smartphones are allowed for non-commercial use. Detachable lenses and professional video equipment are prohibited. Drones, tripods, and lighting kits are not permitted. Security includes airport-style screening and monitoring throughout Tom Lee Park. Bring standard gear and expect inspections for a smooth experience.

What to Photograph

  • Crowds along the riverfront

  • Sunset color over the Mississippi

  • Wide shots of the stages

  • Street style and festival details

Photography Tip

Walk the riverfront before the gates get busy. The mix of early arrivals, vendors setting up, and soft morning light gives you storytelling moments you won’t find later in the day.

What to Photograph

Why I Track Events in Memphis

Photography isn’t just about gear. It’s about presence.

Knowing where the energy will be helps you anticipate moments instead of chasing them. Memphis has a rhythm that shifts with the seasons, and staying connected to that rhythm makes you a better storyteller.

Tracking events keeps me grounded in what’s happening across the city. It helps me understand how people move, gather, celebrate, and show up for each other. If you see me out photographing one of these, come say hello.

As Memphis Moves Into Summer

The city opens up in a way that feels unmistakably Memphis.
Rooftop parties return. Riverfront sunsets stretch longer. Festivals stack up. Neighborhoods stay active well into the evening. The light gets warmer, softer, and more forgiving.

Soon I’ll be releasing full seasonal guides to help you plan your shoots:

• Top Summer Photoshoot Locations in Memphis
• Best Fall Photography Spots in Memphis
• Winter Photography in Memphis
• Spring Photography in Memphis

And later this year, I’ll publish a complete annual breakdown:

• Best Events in Memphis for Photographers

These guides will help you understand not just where to shoot, but when the city feels most alive.
